The Caliph's Bride Part 3 Answer

The old man said "I will die on the rack."

This put the Caliph in an impossible position.

He had said that if the man told the truth he would die by the axe, so if he did put him on the rack as the old man foretold the statement would be true and he should have been axed.

If he did put him to the axe the statement "I will die on the rack"  would be false and so he should have been racked.

The Caliph's actions decide whether the statement is true or not and the only actions available to him are impossible because of his promise.

The Caliph now lives with his twelve wives in a retirement home for the criminally bewildered just outside the palace walls.
